Strategies to curb the overeating this holiday season...

  1. Don't starve yourself while waiting for that evening party to start. Small, light meals through the day will keep you satisfied so you don't gorge at the party.
  2. Scour that buffet table, know what is offered and then make wise choices. Put your food on a small plate and sit down to eat it. No nibbling!!
  3. Slow down. Put your fork down in between bites to help with this. If you eat too fast, your body won't register that it is full and seconds may get very tempting.
  4. Be prepared. If you are headed out for a day of Christmas shopping, pack a few snacks such as fruit, veggies, nuts, low fat string cheese, etc.
  5. Curb the alcohol. I know, that's a hard one when everyone else is drinking. Sparkling water or Sparlking cider are great. Oh yeah, egg nog needs to be left in the decanteur and careful the punch, it's usually spiked this time of year.
  6. Set a good example. If you are hosting the party, impress your friends/colleagues with a healthy spread. It will look absolutely great with all the different colors that no one will notice it is good for them!!
  7. Stay active. The social calendar is enough to stress anyone this year. Don't forget to maintain your workout schedule. Now is the most important time to be diligent. It will keep the pounds off and the stress at bay.
Happy Holidays From Kaye and Mandy!

Tip of the Month...

To supplement your weekly workouts at the gym, use the great outdoors!! Maine is an awesome place to explore whether it be by biking, walking, running, hiking, swimming, even gardening!!...name your pleasure and go out to enjoy it!!
Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate
Can you remember the last glass of water you had today? How many glasses is suggested through the day and when am I drinking too much? Yes, we can drink too much water and suffer serious repercussions. Let's see if we can wade around in the info and make some sense of it.Here are some quick facts...
1. Water is one of the most essential components of the body
2. Water regulates body temperature, protects vital organs, and
helps with digestion.
3. Water composes 75% of muscle tissue and 10% of fatty
tissue.
4. Water transports nutrients within the body and dispells waste.

The latest recommendations are that women drink 91 oz and men drink 125 oz of water a day!! We're going to float away!! Remember, various drinks, fruits, veggies, and soups contain water. Poland Spring...plastic vs going green...you choose!! When we exercise, we can lose up to a quart of water per session depending on the temperatures and exercise intensity. Always drink before, during, and after your workout!! Your body will stay happy and healthy.

Dehydration is common in the warmer months. If you are only drinking when you are thirsty, it's too late!! Know that the thirst mechanism doesn't kick in until we have entered the dehydration phase and now we have to work ourselves out of the negative!! Homeostatis...big word for the tricky balancing act our bodies require us to juggle. If bloating occurs due to water comsumption, dehydration has set in and the body is holding onto what little it is getting. Keep drinking...it will get better as the body recognizes that it will keep being watered!! It's just like the eating thing we talk about all the time. Eating small meals every 3-4 hours and sipping on water throughout the day will have our bodies humming like fine tuned machines!! Drink up!!
And We Ran....
Friday 6:00 PM...Kennebunk Free Library Fundraiser...Mother Nature finally decided to give us warmth and was it ever warm!!! The Library lawn was crowded with people. A band was playing on the front steps, food was being prepped on the side lawn, and an auction flanked the band on the lawn. I checked in, lined up, and before I knew it, I was running the streets of Kennebunk. I thought...I can do this...I have done it twice before and I can do it this time!! Oh...it was hot...hills...keep running...mile 1...only 2.2 miles to go!! I was wishing I had drinken more water (didn't want to have to go pee halfway through the race!!) Water station ahead...I grabbed a dixie cup of water...oh great!! Note to self...stop running when trying to drink!! I was wearing my much needed water. Mile 2...more water!! I stopped and drank my dixie cup full of water. It wasn't enough...couldn't wait around, people I had passed were now passing me!! Get going Kaye...one more set of hills to go. Mile 3...look at all the people...the finish line...there's a client!! Don't wimp out now...get moving...feet, don't let me down now!! There's Shelly, there's Tina, there's ME!!! I made it!! Just get me some water!! Here comes Erin...Dusti too...Barbara is crossing the line!! Congratulations Ladies!! All of you represented Forever Fit in the best kind of way I can imagine!!

Nicole's Run...We had a small but impressive team at this rainy, foggy 5K on July 26th. The air was heavy, the tide was out...that distinct smell of seaweed in the air...and the damp coolness all came together to make this a challenging run for Mandy, Shelly, and Michelle with baby Kate!! It was Michelle and Kate's first run!! I was on the sidelines cheering them onto the finish line!! The ladies did a great job as usual. Again, Forever Fit was very well represented!! Great Job to all who participated!!

Tip of the Month:

With Spring here and Summer around the corner, remember to hydrate consistently through the day. If you feel thirsty, your body is dehydrated!! It's past time to drink that water!!

FYI There is such a thing as drinking too much water. Everything in moderation is our mantra here at Forever Fit.
